According to legend, when the Great Spirit laid his hands on this land to bless it, the imprints left by his fingers filled with water to form lakes. Hence, the “Finger Lakes”.
The Finger Lakes region, a region of tiny villages like Watkins Glen where summers bring Friday night band concerts as you stop to sip a glass of Riesling at one of the sixty vineyards that blanket the hills or take a dip in the crystalline waters of any of the eleven lakes, you are mindful that the region is the most beautiful on earth.
Horses graze in meadows, corn and wheat fields pattern the landscape, and, in many places, it’s
open sky country with
miles of vistas in every direction. Gorges, waterfalls, and slim fingers of blue water highlight the landscape.
About Seneca Lake
The native American translation for “Seneca” a
Place of Stone, hardly does the lake justice. About twenty
vineyards covering hundreds of acres are planted on the hillsides that gently slope to the water’s edge. In the parks,
hikers and bikers explore the vast network of trails and
campers pitch their tents.
At thirty five miles long and estimated to be more than 630 feet deep in some places (the second deepest lake in the country), Seneca Lake is a coveted water playground for boaters, sailors, anglers and swimmers.
